Take Refuge in God
11But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, so that those who love your name may exult in you. 12 For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover them with favor as with a shield.
When I first came to this church several years ago, I was dealing with life challenges and needed something to feed my soul and help me navigate the troubled waters. Life sometimes has a way of draining you and I always said to my kids you need to do something to feed your soul. I was new to the church, so I sat in a pew and watched and listened on Sundays during worship for several months. One day I heard the choir director was looking for a flute player to support one of the anthems. It had been some years since I played, but I volunteered to fill the role. Then I started singing in the choir which is something I hadn’t done since I was 10 or 11 years old.
Singing in the choir has been a tremendous help in my life…there is usually something in those anthems that resonates and provides life guidance; “one step he leads, and one step I follow, God knows my needs and he will deliver” or “as I went down to the river to pray, studying about that good ol’ way and who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord show me the way!” There are so many other wonderful anthems the choir sings and they sometimes play on a continuous loop in my brain for the entire week.
Thank you for giving us music in the church, music in our hearts, and music in heaven; for you are our strength and our song. Amen.
