Abide in Me, John 15:3-4
3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.
Abiding in Christ, being connected with your Faith all the way down to your roots, is a great metaphor for how we are told to live our lives as Christians. Ultimately, if we are living as good Christian vines, the fruit that we bear would be obvious. When I look at my life, I have had some seasons where the harvest has been plentiful. That meant spending my time helping others, being generous with my time and talents, giving back, loving my family, friends, neighbors and strangers; truly living in the community of Faith.
On the flip side, I have also gone through periods of my life where I have grown weary, cynical, judgmental, and apathetic about feeding my Faith. I have filled my time with streaming videos, internet junk food, shopping for things I do not need, and staying comfortable. These activities do nothing to… grow my faith, bring life meaning, or feed my soul.
The decision to follow Christ is one that we need to make every day. As we go through this Lenten season, it is a perfect time to prune our time and choose what fruits we want to bear. Make a commitment to use your talents to give back and be a blessing to others.
Lord, give me the desire to live my life in your abiding presence. Help me to be mindful that you are the vine and I am the branch with the opportunity to bear fruit in your name. Amen.
