16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
Who hasn’t been driving around on a highway and seen a tractor trailer pass with the words “John 3:16” written on the back of the trailer? I know I have many times. You see the words on signs in trees or on buildings. It’s even popular in songs. Take for example the song by Country music star, Keith Urban, “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”… “And I learned everything I needed to know from John Cougar, John Deere, and John 3:16…”
Sadly, I must admit I did not recall this verse and had to look it up…. “for God so loved the world that he gave his only Son…that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life”. This is pretty powerful stuff, if you really sit and think about it. But sometimes we don’t feel like God loves us, because why is life so difficult and unfair? Why do people suffer? Why is there so much hate and misery in this world?
Years ago, when things were in the toilet for me, it was super easy to cast blame and be angry with God. It was just not fair. But as I grew and listened, it became clearer that God does love us. Life is not perfect and there will always be challenges. And when the going gets tough, we just need to stop, take a few deep breaths, and listen to the words of God… that he does love us and the world so much, that he gave us his only Son. And that, when it is our time, we will not perish, but have eternal life. So do not fear and fret, it will be okay. So stop and enjoy the little things that matter. Live. Laugh. Love.
God, thank you for loving us so much that you gave us your only son. Continue to send us the signs of your love, whether it be in trees, on buildings, or on tractor trailers. May we all grow in peace, now and forever. Amen.
