16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
Like some of you, I can remember a time when, at any public event—a parade, a baseball or football game, a road race, a speech—someone would be shown in the background with a sign that simply read: “John 3:16.” I guess they hoped that we viewers would then be motivated to look up that verse and explore how we could get on board and be saved. I’ve often wondered how well that worked but you have to hand it to them, they persisted.
Our good news is that we are saved by the grace of God and in the belief that Jesus died for us. Imagine having such hope in the human race that you would be willing to make such a sacrifice.
I imagine God filled with the hope that we would embrace the teachings of love and forgiveness so completely that we would end our bickering, be more tolerant of one another, and practice love in any way we can.
Because God loved us so much that he sent His only Son for us, we persist in our faith. We read the word, we do good works, we pray for guidance, forgiveness, and strength, and we worship in community.
We are hopeful that our prayers will be answered and our sins always forgiven and that we will find strength in one another. We are hopeful that together we can create a world that embraces Jesus and his teachings. And when we falter, we need only to look to God’s light to know we are saved.
Today, I live in hope. I look toward the light and I thank God with all my heart for giving me his most precious Son. Amen.
