Remember Your ABC’s
Wednesday, April 15, 2020
I pray that this finds you, and all who you know and love, well. Staying well, physically, emotionally and spiritually is easier said than done in these strange times. We have limitations in every place in our lives and we all react differently to those limitations.
One way we’re all reacting to these limitations is poor sleep; whether it’s from worry, lack of exercise, poor diet, increased responsibilities, and/or fear of the unknown. Yet, good sleep is a key ingredient in staying well. So, what do we do when we wake up in the middle of the night to calm ourselves down and get back to a peaceful sleep? Well, we all probably have a few tricks already but here’s one to add to the list: Remembers your ABCs. That’s right, go through the alphabet, slowly and thoughtfully, 1 letter at a time. For every letter, think of someone whose name starts with that letter and pray for them. If you can’t think of someone whose name begins with that letter than think of a group of people, a part of the world, even a part of society or an issue that matters to you.
I have done this may times over the last few weeks and it really works! Rarely have I even gotten through half of the alphabet and the next thing I know, I have awoken peacefully, in the morning!
For those of you who are blessed to sleep deeply, you might try this exercise while standing in line outside the grocery store, or walking around your neighborhood or taking a time out and hiding from your spouse or children (or both)!
God is not only the God of Resurrection and new life. God is also a God of Shalom (peace). Now more than ever we can call upon God to help us find peace in the midst of the chaos, instead of impatiently waiting until we are set free from these restrictions to be at peace again. Imagine that, tonight, someone might be naming you in their ABCs. Maybe you can name them too.
Sweet dreams (and prayers)
In this WITH you,
